St-Dalmas-le-Selvage: An intact charm and identity. The northernmost village in the Alpes-Maritimes, Saint-Dalmas-le-Selvage is typically alpine with its high houses with shingle roofs, tight against each other. The 12th century church with Romanesque bell tower is classified. The chapel Sainte-Marguerite, also classified, contains frescoes attributed to G. Baleison. Alpine pastures receive large transhumant sheep flocks. The road of Bonette, one of the highest roads in Europe (2 802 m) between Tinée and Ubaye, crosses them. Borrowed in summer by more than sixty thousand vehicles, it offers a breathtaking panorama of the Southern Alps. | |
